Remarkable Golf Courses
Golf courses are all unique. Each design is made special by its differing backdrops, land, soil, grass, location and climate. Sports journalist and author Iain T. Spragg takes readers to some of the world’s most spectacular golf courses through stunning full-colour photography. Remarkable Golf Courses explores the extremes of the sport, from the highest course in La Paz, Bolivia, to the lowest in Death Valley, USA; from the most northerly in the Arctic Circle to the most southerly in Tierra del Fuego.
The book features courses with historical and cultural significance, such as a course that features neolithic standing stones in Scotland and a course that runs along Roman roads in England. A course built on the ruins of a medieval castle in Wales takes its place alongside the old temples of Delhi or a UNESCO World Heritage bridge that links the 9th and 10th at Angkor Wat.
In addition to the classic courses of St. Andrews, Carnoustie, and Royal St. George, the book also features spectacular courses in the desert, on lava flows, and even excites us with lining up a drive on an active volcano at the Fuego Maya course in Guatemala.
It also covers the many quirks of the golfing world, such as a course with an electric ferry to the 18th green, a course with its own funicular railway, and a course with a floating green that changes position daily.
But perhaps two courses highlight the complete variety of world golf and this book in particular: the strange story and vivid colours of Augusta National are not ignored, yet neither are those of Clearview Golf Club in East Canton, Ohio.
In happy contrast to Augusta, a club forever linked to a history of racial segregation, Clearview’s heritage is one of straightforward hope. The club was formed by Bill Powell, an African-American golfer who fought for his country in the Second World War but was excluded from white-only courses on his return home. His response? He built a course himself, let anyone play it, and granted it a magnificent name.
It is one of so many astonishing stories in the book, which, along with some stunning photography, illustrates the exquisite range of a sport that has travelled the world.
